THE DOCTOR FROM "THE BIG SHORT" · SCION ASSET MANAGEMENT
Extreme contrarian: concentrated bets against consensus, from subprime mortgages to the market's most loved stocks.
Michael Burry is the physician-turned-fund-manager who foresaw the subprime mortgage collapse. Through his fund Scion Capital he bought credit default swaps against mortgage-backed securities when everyone considered them safe: when the house of cards fell in 2008, his investors earned over 700% cumulative. The story is told in the book and film "The Big Short", where Christian Bale plays him.
Before that, Burry was a rare case: a neurology resident writing value analyses on a late-night blog, so convincing that big funds began copying him, and Joel Greenblatt offered a million dollars for a stake in his newborn firm.
Today he runs Scion Asset Management with concentrated, often provocative positions, communicating almost exclusively through quarterly 13Fs and cryptic, later-deleted tweets. Every filing he makes triggers articles and debate.
Big funds' moves are public in SEC 13F filings: InsiderFlow tracks and explains them.
He runs Scion Asset Management: his portfolio can be read every quarter in the 13F filed with the SEC, tracked by InsiderFlow too.
No, and he admits it: many of his bearish bets cost years of waiting or losses. His value is independence from consensus, not infallibility.
